The Swim in 1 Day (SID) Africa Initiative, registered in Barcelona, Spain, serves as the headquarters for the international missions of Swim in 1 Day SID Africa.
In its effort to eradicate the black drowning pandemic, SID aims to provide relief both mentally through water therapy and life coaching sessions and physically through swimming, mentoring, and other empowering activities.

The Double Trauma of Africa Migrants: Survival Beyond the Mediterranean

News like this has become common place, SID Represents action through Empowerment on all fronts
Challenges Faced by African Migrants
African migrants who brave the deadly Mediterranean crossing in search of safety and opportunity face a harsh reality: their trauma doesn’t end on shore. Upon arrival, many endure:
- Systemic Exploitation: Sexual abuse, forced prostitution, drug coercion and trafficking due to economic desperation.
- Structural Exclusion: Homelessness, cultural isolation, and job market discrimination.
- Legal Vulnerability: Blackmail and threats from locals weaponizing their undocumented status.
- Psychological Abandonment: Zero mental health support amid relentless survival struggles.
The traumatic experiences migrants endure while navigating perilous journeys to foreign lands in search of greener pastures often leave them vulnerable to mental health issues. Without proper care, many suffer from loneliness, anxiety, and depression. The pressure to survive, earn money, and suddenly become providers for families back home, who sacrificed everything to help them embark on this journey, pushes many to their limits, intensifying feelings of isolation and distress in unfamiliar environments.
SID Solution
This is why our SID International Missions exist:
We intervene where systems fail by providing:
✓ Human Rights Education – Empowering migrants to recognize and resist abuse.
✓ Survival Guidance – Navigating legal, cultural, and economic challenges.
✓ Mental Health Advocacy – Addressing invisible wounds of displacement.
“Escaping drowning should not mean drowning in despair, and escaping systems that failed them in their countries of origin should not mean that we continue failing them.”
Swim Guru Emeka
The SID Africa Project aims to provide these migrants with the long-overdue support they desperately need. Through social group sessions within the Swim in 1 Day (SID) community, migrants will receive counseling and a safe haven to address their mental health and social adaptation needs. SID empowers them not only by teaching swimming but also by educating them about their rights. The project will aim to provide mentorship and legal volunteering assistance to help migrants navigate and regularize their status, easing their integration into new communities.
Join us in building lifelines for those who have already crossed oceans of hardship.
