SID Action Plan

PROBLEM

Data from 2020, and it is getting worse by the day with Climate change and its consequences! Time to Act! These deaths are unnecessary and preventable.

The Challenges that exist that Swim in 1 Day SID Africa seeks to combat:

  • 90% of global drowning deaths occur in Africa and developing countries (WHO).
  • A 2024 UNEP study reveals that over 90% of natural disasters are linked to water, emphasizing the importance of swimming as a vital survival skill (Preparedness)
  • National statistics show a staggering 27,000 annual drowning deaths in various water bodies.
  • Recent data from ReliefWeb (September 2024) highlights the devastating impact of seasonal flooding in Nigeria, affecting over 137,000 people, resulting in 68 “known”deaths, and displacing nearly 20,000 individuals.
  • Climate change is exacerbating extreme weather events, such as floods and cyclones, particularly in regions with inadequate infrastructure (Greenpeace).
  • Globally, over 1.3 billion people live with disabilities (16% of the world’s population), with the majority residing in developing countries and facing significant challenges, including stigma, discrimination, poverty, and exclusion.
  • People with disabilities and the less privileged are disproportionately affected by climate change, natural disasters, and drowning accidents, often being the “unaccounted for” victims being that they are the most vulnerable.
  • In many African countries, accurate data on victims is scarce, hindering inclusive economic growth and awareness about individual responsibilities towards a safer and more secure future.
  • Disregard for Civic Responsibilities: Widespread ignorance about climate change and its consequences leads to disregard for civic responsibilities regarding climate action and disability awareness and inclusion.
  • Impact on Economic Growth: The exclusion of disabled talents from climate action and economic opportunities hinders inclusive economic growth and development.

Inclusive economic growth especially involving people with disabilities is rarely prioritized in most African societies. Instead, there is often a conscious tendency toward exclusion. Widespread ignorance about our collective responsibility to ensure justice and fairness for people with disabilities persists. A deliberate effort to eliminate this ignorance is essential.

SID SOLUTION

FACT: Swimming is the best & most important layer of protection against drowning.

FACT: “Knowledge is power” Combatting climate ignorance, through deliberate and consistent mass education and sensitization is key.

FACT: Realizing sustainable socio-economic development goals in Africa would happen much faster through a deliberate inclusive socio-economic plan.

The inability to empathize and see or value what people could bring to the table beyond their physical appearances, while appreciating and recognizing that there is much more to a person than the physical is the worst form of disability that could exist.
